The Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment, a French state establishment, runs 5,000 m² of fire laboratories at Champs-sur-Marne with around forty specialists, turning out roughly 3,500 reaction to fire tests and 200 fire resistance tests a year. The reaction to fire side covers the single burning item, flammability, floor coverings, non-combustibility and radiation tests, plus ELEPIR for fire spread along façades — the French large-scale façade test, and the reason a cladding build-up can be assessed as a system rather than a set of components. The fire resistance laboratory has four furnaces including the modular Vulcain, testing structural elements to the EN 1363–1366 series. Accredited by COFRAC to ISO/IEC 17025 and approved by the Ministry of the Interior under the arrêté of 5 February 1959, with recognition from the European Commission, the IMO and Certifer.
