About

An independent non-profit applied-research institute at San Antonio that has run fire work since the 1950s and now holds some 48,500 square feet of fire testing laboratory space. Its large-scale vertical furnace takes 12 by 12 ft assemblies under structural loading to 125,000 lb and its horizontal furnace 12.5 by 16 ft to 130,000 lb, which is what allows loaded floor and wall assemblies to be rated as built rather than inferred. Accredited by the International Accreditation Service as a testing laboratory to ISO/IEC 17025 (TL-214) and recognised by OSHA as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. The standards run include ASTM E119 fire resistance and ASTM E84 surface burning, and an unusually deep smoke and toxicity line — ASTM E662 and NFPA 258 optical density, ISO 5659-2, IMO FTP Code Part 2, and colorimetric and FTIR analysis of the toxic gases a fire actually produces.
